Right before we all went home to stay there for a long while in a global pandemic, I found a bushel basket of vintage paper dolls at an estate sale. With no studio save for my kitchen table and most of my work in progress left behind in my classroom, I spent my evenings making over a hundred collages with these outfits and body parts. With all of the conversations about not wearing pants on zoom or whether women would ever want to wear bras again, it felt like kismet to have found these materials that spoke so well to our discomfort and navigation of formality in our private spaces as we explored our new normal. The uncanny familiarity of these nostalgic playthings were the perfect medium for the moment.
